Commitment and Honor

We Use the CPS System.  Scouts are taught about real life COMMITMENT, PRACTICE, and STRICTNESS.  Without these three essential lessons, boys will never fully develop into better citizens or workers.  While other troops focus only on fun, we focus on real life while having fun.

Troop 12 is a Boy Scouts of America program located in San Francisco.  Since 1915, our program has been dedicated to educating young boys today and turning them into the great leader's of tomorrow.

One very unique aspect of our troop which is foreign to all other Boy Scout troops is our completely boy run scout program.  All the adults have to do is sit back relax and drive.  The boys cook, lead, decide on camping sites, and create new activities for the scouts.  In fact, this website is made by the Senior Patrol Leader.

Troop 12 is a diverse troop.  The majority of boys in our troop attend middle school.  These schools include public schools such as Hoover, Roosevelt, AP Gianninni, Presidio and private schools including Star of the Sea.

Troop 12 is a very vigorous and challenging path for young boys.  Troop 12 is not a casual program.  We usually meet from 3 to 4 times a week.  These meetings include the mandatory Scout Meetings on Friday, and the Drum and Bugle Practices on Saturday.  There are also two to three day camping trips including backpacking trips, 3 day snow trips, rain-trips, and two weeks of summer camp.  We are also deeply involved in service to the community.  The troop is also divided into patrols who also have occassional meetings or outings.  We try to get young boys to make a full commitment to something rather than having them come occasionally.  Unfortunately, many boys are not ready to meet these real-life challenges and decided to drop their commitments.  Those who continue the program receive a sense of self-respect and a step to manhood.

Besides those many meetings, we enforce strictness.  For example, our Flag ceremonies at camping trips amaze people.  Such awesomeness only comes through a strict regime of practice.  Unlike many sloppy troops, our troop succeeds in being the only troop to have a D&B corps in the Bay Area, the most good-looking, and the best in everything.

So, what are we good at?  Well everything!  Scouts learn how to survive in the rain, cross rivers with only a few rocks in between, knots, First Aid, and many other useful knowledge.  In fact, in recent District Camporee competitions, our patrols blew the rest away winning 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place in every single event including lashing, first aid, knot tying, orienteering, and others.  What makes us so good?  We are the only troop deeply committed into making young men of dedication.

What do we do at meetings?  We do a lot of different things during our Friday Meetings. Each patrol gives the troop a half hour presentation.  We have discussion about camping trips and lessons on First Aid.  Finally, we put our knowledge to practice when each patrol competes against the others in events.  These events include lashings, knots, first aid, atomic pile, and obstacle courses.

What about REAL TRAINING?  We spend 2 weeks of our summer at Wente Scout Reservation.  Each scout participates in about a total of 10 merits badges for the 2 weeks.  We also do many fun service projects at Wente including pulling weeds in our canoes.  We are a jamboree troop meaning we cook our own meals three times a day.  Scouts are forced to work together during these two weeks to get things done.  They develop individuality as well as an appreciation for nature.  Those who quit our troop usually cannot cope with real life and must still heavily rely on their parents.  During this training, each scout is required to learn self-reliance!

So want to know where to find us?  For our Friday Meetings, we attend Christ United Presbyterian Church in JapanTown near Sutter street. These Friday meetings occur from 7:30-9:30.  Meetings are posted on the Grapevine.  Drum and Bugle(We have to do both) practice takes place at Presidio Middle School in the Richmond District.
